How deep should a fence post be?

In practice, most residential posts land in these depths, and the taller or more solid the fence, the deeper you go:

So the code neither reaches your fence nor asks you to pull a permit for it. Where fences really do get regulated is local zoning, which cares about height, setbacks, and what you put on a corner lot, and has nothing to say about how deep your post goes.

The frost line, which is real even though the code is not
Losing the citation costs you nothing, because the physics was never the part in doubt. When wet ground freezes it swells and lifts, and it lifts anything buried in it. A post that stops short of the frost line gets shoved up a little more every winter until it tilts. That is frost heave, and it is the single most common reason a fence that stood straight in July is leaning by spring. No code has to command it for it to happen in your yard. If yours is already tipping, the way to tell frost from rot is to look at whether the whole footing rode up as a unit.

- Concrete footing with a gravel base: the default for any real fence. Set deep enough and wide enough, it gives the best resistance to leaning and can be crowned to shed water. This is what you want for a privacy fence.

- Expanding foam: fast and light, no mixing, good for a small repair or a light-duty post. It has less mass and stiffness than a proper concrete footing, so it can move more over time, and it is a poor choice in soggy or hard-freezing ground.

Wet-set means you mix the concrete with water first, in a wheelbarrow or a bucket, then pour it in and set the post.
Here's the part that settles the argument: done right, both hold a post about the same for the long haul. The strength is in the technique, not the method. Dry-set is faster and easier if you're working alone, and it likes dry weather so the water ratio stays predictable. Wet-set gives you more control to nudge the post into alignment and behaves better in damp conditions. Pick the one that fits your day and brace the post either way.
How much concrete do I need for each fence post?
First, buy the right bag, because the two products get mixed up constantly. Fast-setting mix comes in 50 and 60 pound bags, yielding about 0.375 and 0.45 cubic feet. There is no 80 pound bag of fast-setting. The 80 pound bag, at about 0.6 cubic feet, is standard concrete mix, which is a different product with a different set time.
Now the math, which is smaller than people guess. A 10-inch hole dug 36 inches deep holds about 1.6 cubic feet. Take out the 6 inches of gravel you just put in the bottom, then take out the space the post itself occupies, and you actually need roughly 1.2 cubic feet of concrete. That is three 50-pound bags of fast-setting mix, or two 80-pound bags of standard. Buy one spare either way, because coming up short in the middle of a pour is the one mistake you cannot walk back.
