You walked out back, saw the fence tipping, and you want to know one thing: is this an afternoon or is this a weekend? That gets decided at the base of the post, not at the top of it. Almost every lean traces to one of two things. Either the post lost its strength, or the ground lost its grip on it. Ten minutes with a screwdriver tells you which one you have, and that answer picks your repair for you. So do the diagnosis first. Buying parts before you know what failed is how a twenty dollar problem turns into a weekend.

What causes a fence to lean?

Sort every cause into two buckets and the fix gets a lot clearer. Either the post itself is failing, or the soil and footing holding it are failing:

  • The post is failing: wood rots right at the soil line where it stays damp, or an impact (a fallen limb, kids climbing, an animal leaning on it) cracks or racks it out of plumb.
  • The footing is failing: the post was set too shallow or in too little concrete, so it tips in soft ground.
  • Frost heave: in freeze and thaw country, water around the footing freezes, expands, and lifts the whole concrete plug, tilting a post that is otherwise perfectly sound.
  • The soil gave out: heavy rain, a downspout, or irrigation saturates clay or silt, and it erodes, softens, or shrinks and cracks until the post has nothing firm to lean on.
  • The collar cracked: the concrete around the post splits or separates from the wood, and now the post wobbles in an oversized hole even though the lumber is fine.
  • Nature moved it: erosion, tree roots pushing from one side, or a burrow at the base shifts the post over time.

Figure out which problem you have

Before you buy a single part, spend ten minutes finding out what actually failed. It is mostly looking, pushing, and a little scraping:

  1. 1Sight down the top rail from one end. Note whether a single section leans while the rest stands straight, or several posts lean the same way or waver back and forth.
  2. 2Push the fence at the middle of a panel and again low, right at the post. A good post in a good footing barely moves. A bad one gives, wobbles, or feels spongy at the base.
  3. 3Probe the wood at the soil line with a screwdriver or an awl. If the tip sinks in or the wood crumbles away, you have rot at grade, which is where posts almost always rot first.
  4. 4Scrape the soil back until you can see the top of the concrete. Look for cracks, a gap between the wood and the concrete, or a footing that has clearly tilted or lifted on one side.

That last step answers the big question: did it move as a unit, or rot from the inside? If the concrete, post, and panel all lean together and the wood at grade is still firm, the footing shifted or was too small. If the concrete is standing straight but the post wiggles inside it or is soft at the collar, the wood failed inside a footing that is still fine. The first calls for resetting or bracing. The second calls for a mender or a new post.

While you are down there, read the ground. Standing water, a downspout dumping nearby, or bare eroded soil on one side points at a drainage problem you will want to fix too, or the repair will not last. And look for the frost signature: a footing that sits higher than its neighbors, a ring of cracked soil around it, a lean that you straighten every year and that comes back every spring. That is ice under the plug lifting it and setting it back down a little off each time. Frost is the one cause you cannot beat with better hardware, only with a hole cut the right way, which is a different job than a repair.

One bad post, or the whole fence?

This is the call that decides whether you spend an afternoon or a weekend, so make it before you start.

It is a single post job when just one post (a gate post is the usual suspect) leans while the ones on either side stay plumb, the damage is clearly local (crumbling wood, a cracked collar, a spot someone backed into), and the soil and drainage look normal down the rest of the line. Fix that one post and you are done.

It is a systemic problem when several posts lean the same direction or wave along the run, when posts feel loose at the base even though the wood is not rotten, or when you have got known clay, poor drainage, or hard freezes and more than one footing is tilted or heaved. That pattern means they were set too shallow or the ground moves, and fixing one post is a band aid. The real answer is deeper posts and better drainage across the affected sections.

Call 811 before you put a shovel in the ground

Two of the four repairs below have you breaking out old concrete and opening a fresh hole, so this part is not optional. Call 811 or file online, wait out the notice period your state sets, and the utilities come mark their buried lines for free. Two things trip people up on a repair specifically. First, a locate is not a permanent thing. Paint fades, flags walk off, and the ticket from whenever this fence went up ran out long ago, so an old locate buys you nothing today. Second, redigging an old trench feels safer than it is. How to fix a leaning fence, cheapest fix first

Match the repair to the failure and work down this list only as far as your problem actually requires. These are ordered by what they cost you in money and in your Saturday, cheapest and easiest at the top. Stop at the first one that fits.

1. Brace it and re-plumb it

Best when the post is still solid, the concrete is not cracked, and it just shifted in soft soil. Screw angled 2x4s to the rails and stake them into the ground, push the fence back to vertical, then pack gravel or soil tight around the base and regrade so water drains away. A little fresh concrete helps if the original collar was skimpy. This is the cheap rung, and most of what it costs you is your own time. A few 2x4s, stakes, screws, and maybe a bag of concrete is tens of dollars of material in our experience, not hundreds, assuming you already own a drill and a level. Figure an hour or two. Good first project.

2. Drive a steel mender alongside the post

Best when the post rotted at the soil line but is still sound higher up, or the footing is marginal, and you would rather not dig out concrete. You straighten and brace the fence, then either drive steel stakes into the ground beside the post (the Post Buddy style) or drive steel brackets down against the buried section and fasten them to sound wood (a Simpson Strong-Tie E-Z Mender), moving the load off the rotten inch and onto good wood and firm soil.

Two things people get wrong with the E-Z Mender (Simpson's model number is FPBM44E, 12 gauge steel). It goes in as a pair, not as a single plate, so price the pair. And Simpson's own guidance is to drive each one at least 11 inches into the ground, and to add a second pair on the opposite face of the post when the post is in rough shape. Half driven menders are the most common reason this repair fails.

Cost wise this is a step up from bracing and still a long way below replacement. A mender kit is tens of dollars, not hundreds. No digging, no concrete, and it is the easiest of the real repairs. The catch: it only works when the decay is a small zone at grade. A post that is soft all the way up still needs replacing, and no bracket changes that.

3. Dig out and reset the same post

Best when the post itself is sound but the footing shifted, sat too shallow, or got heaved by frost. Brace the fence, break out the old concrete plug, then widen and deepen the hole and reset the same post plumb, with gravel underneath and fresh concrete crowned on top so water sheds off it. Here is the thing nobody says out loud: if you reset it to the depth that already failed you, you are paying to do this twice. 4. Replace the post

Best when the post is rotted through, cracked, snapped, or was undersized to begin with. Brace the fence and pull the rails or panels as needed, take out the old post and its footing, dig a fresh hole to depth, and set a new post (go bigger or better treated if the old one was too light) in gravel and concrete, checking plumb in both directions before you rehang everything. This is the most involved of the four, most of a day once you count the busted concrete you have to haul off, and a new post plus concrete and hardware is the biggest material bill on the ladder. It is also the only one that truly resets the clock.

Can you fix a leaning fence without replacing the posts?

Often, yes, and usually without pulling a single board. A few ways to prop a post back up while the panels stay put:

When you do call a pro, expect to be quoted by the post, and expect the number to move on five things. Whether a machine can get to the fence line, or whether a 36 inch gate means everything gets dug by hand. Whether the old concrete has to come out, which is the single biggest labor swing on the job. Whether they haul the debris away or you do. And whether it is a gate post, which is a heavier post, a bigger footing, and a rehang, so it is priced closer to two ordinary posts than one. Ask for the quote broken out that way and you can see what you are actually paying for.

Do it yourself when it is one or two posts, you can get at them, and you own a drill, a level, and a shovel. Call a contractor when three or more posts are leaning, when it is a high load gate post, or when the cause is systemic frost or soil movement that needs the run re-engineered rather than patched. And if the fence sits on a shared property line or your HOA has rules about it, confirm the line before anybody digs, because a cheap mistake there gets expensive fast.

There is a point where patching stops making sense. Once you are resetting most of the posts on a run, you are doing the labor of a new fence without getting one, and the honest move is to price the replacement and compare. Measure the footage first, then work out what a new run of that material would actually cost before you sink another weekend into the old one.

One last thing, and it is the part almost everybody skips. Whatever repair you land on, fix the water while you are down there. Move the downspout, regrade so the ground falls away from the post instead of toward it, turn the sprinkler head that soaks that corner. A post that leaned because the soil around it stays wet will lean again, and the second repair costs you exactly what the first one did.
