A slab is a single piece of stone poured in one afternoon on a chemical clock that starts the moment water hits cement, and once it goes off, the only edit anybody makes is with a jackhammer. That's what makes a concrete quote so hard to judge. You aren't buying a thing you can inspect and send back. You're buying a plan, and the plan gets carried out exactly once, by men who won't be standing there tomorrow. The one named index that does exist belongs to Concrete Financial Insights, a market research firm, and it put ready mix around $180 a cubic yard for 2025. Use it with your eyes open, because the firm is honest about what it's measuring: the index tracks four publicly traded producers, which is roughly 4 percent of the concrete poured in this country, and those companies sell heavily into big commercial and highway work that calls for stronger, pricier mixes. The firm says its own number skews high, and it says plainly that no government statistical reporting of ready mix prices exists at all.
The cost aggregators, the sites that sell your name to contractors, cluster delivered residential ready mix somewhere between $125 and $195 a cubic yard, averaging near $145. Not one of those is an official figure and none of them will tell you where it came from. Treat them as what the market says it charges, not as a standard, and you can still use them.
What pushes a yard toward the top of that range: a long haul from the batch plant, a stronger mix, air entrainment and cold weather admixtures, and a small order that trips the plant's short load fee. What pulls it down: a plant within a few miles, a plain 3,000 PSI mix, and a pour big enough that the truck leaves empty. What makes the yard price stop mattering at all is everything in the next section, because on a hard site the concrete is the cheap part.
Now turn a yard into floor space. A cubic yard is 27 cubic feet, so poured 4 inches deep it covers about 81 square feet. At the middle of that market range the concrete itself works out near $1.80 a square foot on a 4 inch slab, and somewhere between $1.55 and $2.40 across the whole range. Why an honest bid can land way above the table
Here's the part the per square foot charts leave out, and it's the reason so many homeowners end up accusing a good contractor of gouging them. Those tables all quietly assume the easiest possible version of your job. Change one condition and the real number moves a long way, and none of that movement is dishonest.
Can the truck actually reach the pour?
This is the single biggest thing missing from every cost page, and a good concrete contractor sizes it up before he even climbs out of his truck. A ready mix truck weighs about as much as a small house, its chute reaches maybe 15 or 18 feet, and it isn't driving across your lawn without leaving ruts you'll be filling for a year. If the forms are in the front driveway and the truck can back right up to them, the mud goes where it's going in minutes.
A back yard patio behind a fence and a gate is a completely different job. Now the concrete gets there one of two ways. A concrete pump or a line pump comes out and shoots it over the house, which adds a piece of equipment and an operator to your bill for the day. Or the crew moves it by hand, in buggies or wheelbarrows, which is a relay of men running heavy loads on a clock that doesn't stop for them. On a small pour that hand carry alone can come close to doubling the price, and the crew has to be bigger to beat the set time. Same concrete, same square footage, twice the number.
So before you compare two bids, ask each man straight out how the concrete gets from the truck to the forms. If one says the chute reaches and the other says he's bringing a pump, one of them has already walked your gate with a tape measure and the other is going to work it out on pour morning, with a loaded drum turning in the street and a set time running. Nothing good gets decided in that hour. Everything on this job that can be thought about has to be thought about now.
What is already there, and where does it go?
Pouring over bare dirt and replacing a cracked slab are not the same project. Breaking out old concrete means a jackhammer or a breaker on a machine, a crew loading rubble, a truck or a dumpster, and a landfill that charges by the ton to take it. Concrete is dense, so a slab you can walk across in five seconds is many tons of debris. Those disposal fees are real money and they're paid to somebody else, not pocketed.
The same goes for the dirt that comes out. Digging for a thicker slab or a deeper base generates spoil, and spoil either gets spread on your property, which is free, or hauled away, which is not. Get it settled in writing which of the two is happening, and get the same in writing for the old slab: who breaks it out, who hauls it, and whether the dump fee sits inside his number or lands on you afterward.
What the ground is hiding
Concrete's honest overruns are almost all in the digging, and nobody can price the digging from the curb. Expansive clay, soft or wet soil, a spot that has to be dug out and replaced with stone, tree roots, an old stump, a buried pipe, a slab of rock. Any one of those means more excavation, more base, and more hours.
Slope matters too. A flat lot forms up quickly. A site that falls a foot across the pour needs grading, taller forms, more concrete on the low side, and sometimes a step or a low wall. Add a permit and an inspection where your city requires one, and add the season, because winter pours need admixtures, blankets, and a longer wait before the slab can carry anything.
The fix isn't to guess at these. It's to agree a unit price for extra excavation and extra base before anybody digs, so if the crew hits rock, the surprise arrives with a number already attached to it instead of a negotiation in your driveway.
The job is won or lost before the truck arrives
Assume for a minute that two bidders priced the same access, the same demo, and the same ground. There's still a gap, and it isn't in the concrete. Both trucks are loading at the same plant, from the same silo, at the same price.
Four things get decided in the days before the pour. Once the chute swings and the mud starts moving, not one of them can be revisited. Not that afternoon, not that week, not ever. That's the whole difference between a concrete bid and every other bid you've read.
The base under the slab
A slab is only as flat as the ground holding it up. A proper job excavates, lays several inches of crushed stone, and compacts it with a plate compactor until it stops moving. A cheap job scrapes the grass off, maybe throws down a thin layer of gravel, and stomps it down with boots or a hand tamper.
That shortcut saves the crew real money on every square foot, so on a 400 square foot patio it frees up hundreds of dollars they never have to spend. It also leaves loose ground under a very heavy object. Soil that was never compacted by a machine gets compacted anyway, slowly, by the weight of your slab, and it doesn't settle evenly. That's why one corner drops and a crack runs diagonally to meet it. Ask what depth of base they're putting down and how they're compacting it. If the answer is vague, or the word compactor never comes up, you've found the missing money.
How thick the slab is
Four inches is what residential flatwork gets poured at. Patios, walkways, and driveways carrying normal passenger cars on decent soil all get four, and that's the trade's number, not a rule anybody wrote down for you. The code is worth knowing anyway, because it tells you how little you're actually owed. The International Residential Code, at R506.1, sets the minimum for a concrete floor slab poured on the ground at three and a half inches, and that section is about floors inside a dwelling. A freestanding patio or a driveway isn't a floor and doesn't appear there at all. So the legal floor on your slab is 3.5 inches or nothing, depending on where the concrete is going, and the trade pours 4 because a minimum is a minimum and not a target.
Once you're parking heavy trucks or an RV, or your soil is soft or expansive clay, it goes to 5 or 6 inches, and the extra inch buys a real jump in the slab's ability to survive the ground moving underneath it. The catch is that thickness costs actual money, because it's pure volume. Going from 4 inches to 5 inches uses about 25 percent more concrete. On a 400 square foot driveway that's over a full extra cubic yard, so call it $180 or more in material before labor. A bid that quietly prices your truck parking pad like a garden patio is cheaper for a reason.
What is holding it together
This is where the sharpest trick lives. A rebar grid, tied and set on chairs so it sits in the middle of the slab instead of down in the dirt, gets quoted around $0.80 to $1.50 a square foot installed. Fiber mixed into the concrete back at the plant is a small add per cubic yard, which works out to somewhere around a dime a square foot. Those two figures are market estimates, not published rates, but the gap between them is the point and the gap is enormous.
So a bid that says reinforced and means fiber is charging you for reinforcement while spending a fraction of what steel costs. Fiber isn't a scam and it isn't useless. It does a real job, which is controlling the fine shrinkage cracks that form while the concrete is curing. What it can't do is hold a slab together when the ground beneath it settles or heaves, and that's exactly the failure a driveway needs steel for. Fiber instead of rebar in a driveway is a downgrade sold as a feature. Get the bar size and the spacing written on the quote, because reinforced on its own tells you nothing about which one is showing up.
The strength of the mix
Concrete gets ordered by compressive strength, in PSI. The International Residential Code does put minimums on this, and they're tiered by how hard your winters are, not written as a single number. Table R402.2 sets porches, steps, carport slabs, and garage floor slabs at 2,500 PSI where the weathering potential is negligible, 3,000 where it's moderate, and 3,500 where it's severe. Your back patio and your driveway aren't rows in that table, because the code is written for dwellings and a freestanding slab out in the yard isn't one. The trade takes the hint anyway, and residential flatwork gets ordered at 3,000 to 4,000 PSI. That part is practice, not code, and it's fair to hold a bidder to it.
Here's the part that is code and matters more than the PSI. Section R402.2 requires air entrained concrete anywhere the weathering is moderate or severe, which covers most of the country that sees a freeze. Air entrainment builds microscopic bubbles into the mix that give freezing water somewhere to expand. Without it, the surface flakes apart. That's what spalling is, and no amount of sealer fixes it after the fact. Stepping up from the weakest passing mix to a stronger one costs the contractor only a modest amount per yard, which is why a good contractor just does it and a cheap one orders the minimum.
The first 24 hours decide the next 20 years
Concrete shrinks as it cures, and it's going to crack. The American Concrete Institute puts that in writing in its report on cracking: shrinkage cracking can't be eliminated. Any contractor who promises you otherwise is either lying or doesn't know his trade. The only real question is whether the slab cracks where somebody decided it should, or wherever it feels like.
That decision is a saw cut, and it has a hard spec behind it. The American Concrete Institute's guide for concrete floors and slabs says that for unreinforced plain slabs, joint spacings of 24 to 36 times the slab thickness have produced acceptable results, up to a maximum spacing of 18 feet. Run that on a 4 inch slab and you get joints every 8 to 12 feet, in both directions. Read the two limits on it, because they matter: the rule is written for plain slabs with no steel in them, and no matter how thick the slab gets, the spacing doesn't stretch past 18 feet.
Depth counts as much as spacing. The working minimum in the trade is a quarter of the slab depth, so on a 4 inch slab you want an inch of blade in it. Cut shallower than that and it's decoration rather than a joint, because the crack simply travels underneath it.
Then timing, which is the part crews actually blow. The cuts get made roughly 4 to 12 hours after the pour, and where in that window depends on the weather: hot, dry, and windy pulls it earlier, cold pushes it later. Cut too soon and the edges ravel. Cut tomorrow and you're too late, because the slab already cracked on its own overnight and your joints are now lines drawn next to the real cracks. A crew that pours on Friday and plans to come back Monday with a saw has already lost the slab.
Get the joint plan in writing before the pour, and here's why that matters more than it sounds. Three winters from now, when a crack turns up, the man who tells you whether it's a normal crack or a failure is the same man who poured the slab and decided where the joints went. He's grading his own homework on a job that happened once, in one afternoon, with nobody watching but his own crew. A joint plan on paper is the one thing that survives that conversation.
The tell that costs nothing to check
Ask any bidder three questions: how deep is the base and how are you compacting it, how far apart are the control joints and when are you cutting them, and how is the concrete reaching the forms. A real concrete contractor answers all three without pausing, in specifics, because he's already thought about them. A crew planning to skip them changes the subject to how good the finish will look.
Build the floor yourself, then see if the bid clears it
You don't need to be a contractor to spot a bid that can't possibly work. You just need to add. Take 100 square feet of a plain 4 inch slab and total up the material that has to be bought before anybody gets paid. One caution first, and it's an honest one: only the concrete figure below comes from a named source. The other three are the numbers the market quotes, so treat this as a working estimate you built yourself, not as a law.
- Concrete: about 1.25 cubic yards once you allow a little waste. At the $125 to $195 market range that is $155 to $245, or roughly $180 in the middle. Delivery and a short load fee sit on top of that.
- Crushed stone base, delivered: commonly quoted around $60 to $80.
- A rebar grid, the steel plus tying it into place: around $80 to $150.
- Forms, stakes, and saw blades to cut the joints: another $75 to $150.
Take the cheapest version of every line and you land near $370 on 100 square feet, or about $3.70 a square foot, which is deliberately generous to the contractor because it assumes he got the best price on all four. Run the middle of the concrete range with the top of the other three and material alone climbs to roughly $5.60. Neither figure has paid for the pour itself: three or four people doing heavy work on a clock, a truck, insurance, and a finishing window that closes whether the crew is ready or not.
So on a plain 4 inch slab in 2026, once a bid drops under about $6 a square foot, the material and the people are being asked to share a number that barely fits the material. That's not proof of dishonesty and it's not a courtroom exhibit. It's an estimate built out of market inputs, and it rests on assumptions you should say out loud: nothing has to be demolished, the truck can back up to the forms, the soil is decent, the site is flat, the slab is 4 inches, and there's no permit fee. Break any one of those and the floor moves up, sometimes a long way, which is precisely why an $11 bid on a sloped back yard with an old patio on it can be the honest one.
Use the number as a question, not a verdict. If a bid comes in under it, ask which of the four decisions got made without you, and ask what the bidder assumed about access and demolition. Sometimes there's a good answer: he's between jobs, your driveway is a straight shot off the street, and he sharpened his pencil. Sometimes the answer is that the steel and the base are simply not in there.
Four things that should end the conversation before the truck is booked
These are specific to concrete, and you won't find them in the generic advice about hiring a contractor:
- The leftover concrete pitch. Somebody knocks on the door and offers a cheap driveway because they have extra concrete from a job down the street. Ready mix is batched to order for a specific pour, and hauling a loaded truck back costs the supplier money. There is no leftover. It is a story.
- A bid with no mix spec. A real quote names the PSI, the reinforcement type and its spacing, the slab thickness, and the base depth. Four numbers. A quote that carries none of them isn't a quote, it's a price.
- Nobody mentions joints. If the whole pitch is about how good the finish will look and the word joint never comes up, that slab is going to crack wherever it likes.
- A promise that it won't crack. The concrete institute already told you shrinkage cracking can't be designed away. A contractor who guarantees otherwise is telling you what you want to hear, and he'll be gone by the winter you find out.
Get the eleven numbers while the slab is still on paper
Stop reading the quotes as documents and start using them as a test. Send every bidder the same list and ask for the answers in writing: square footage, slab thickness, PSI of the mix, whether it's air entrained, reinforcement type with spacing, base material and compacted depth, control joint spacing, when the joints get cut, how the concrete travels from the truck to the forms, what has to be broken out and who pays the dump fee, and the unit price if the digging turns up rock or soft soil.
You aren't grading the prose. You're collecting eleven specifics, and what you learn is mostly about who is willing to hand them over. A contractor who has already planned your pour writes them out in a few minutes, because he knew every one of them before you asked. A contractor who hasn't sends back a paragraph about quality workmanship and years of experience, which is an answer too.
It's worth the twenty minutes. Every one of those eleven numbers is still editable this week, on paper, for free. Next week a truck backs down your driveway and all eleven of them become permanent in about forty minutes.
