Why Is My Laminate Flooring Buckling or Gapping?

The floor looked perfect for a year. Now there’s a ridge running down the hallway, or a seam you can catch with a fingernail, or a gap wide enough to lose a crumb in. Laminate flooring buckling and gapping look like opposite problems. Usually they’re the same problem: a floating floor that isn’t free to move the way it was built to move.

Good news first. A lot of these floors are fixable, sometimes for the cost of an afternoon and a rented tool. Peaking, buckling, cupping, or gapping: which one do you have?

Getting the word right matters, because each one points somewhere different. Kneel down and look at the floor from the side, with your eye near the surface.

  • Peaking: the planks lift right where two of them meet, making a small ridge along the seam. The body of the plank still sits flat.
  • Buckling: a wider area arches up, several rows at once, sometimes lifting clear of the subfloor.
  • Cupping: individual planks dish out, so the two long edges sit higher than the middle. This one means moisture, almost always from below.
  • Lifting: an edge or a corner curls up on its own. Installers call the corner version a cat ear.
  • Gapping: the opposite. Planks pull apart and leave a line you can see, and often feel.

You’ll also see “tenting” and “crowning” thrown around. Be careful with those. The National Wood Flooring Association has a precise definition of crowning, and it is about wood. In laminate the word gets used loosely and inconsistently, and tenting has a real technical meaning in the tile trade and no settled one here at all. If a contractor uses either word, ask them to point at what they mean.

What causes laminate flooring to buckle

A laminate floor floats. Nothing nails it down, and it’s meant to grow and shrink a little as the seasons change. Buckling is what happens when it grows and has nowhere to go.

The expansion gap is missing, or something closed it

This is the first thing an experienced installer checks. The perimeter gap can be missing because it was never cut, or because it got quietly taken away later. Baseboard or quarter round nailed down through the planks, instead of into the wall, spikes the floor in place. So does a doorway that was scribed too tight.

Something heavy is standing on it

A floating floor slides under the trim as it moves. Anything that stops it from sliding becomes an anchor. Kitchen islands and built-in cabinets set on top of the flooring are the usual culprits, and so are the fridge, the range, and the dishwasher.

The National Wood Flooring Association is blunt about this, and its numbers are worth having before you go blaming the planks. It tells installers not to float a floor anywhere that fixed cabinetry is going to sit on top of it later, calling an island exactly that kind of obstruction, because the weight pins the boards where they land. It also hands you a threshold. Once any one board is carrying a concentrated load north of 600 pounds, that is enough to stop the floor floating at all. An island with a stone top and a sink in it passes 600 pounds without trying.

The subfloor was never flat

The figure most laminate makers publish is 3/16 inch of deviation over 10 feet. A floor can be level enough to live on and nowhere near flat enough for laminate, and those are two different measurements. Every hump underneath becomes a hinge the joints have to bend across, and they eventually give up.

Here’s the honest caveat on causes. Installers answering these questions online reach for the expansion gap first and moisture second, and mention subfloor flatness far less. That’s a pattern from reading a lot of threads, not a real statistic. Nobody publishes the percentages. Treat it as where to look first, not as proof of what happened to your floor.

Moisture under laminate flooring

Moisture is the other half of the story, and it’s the half that decides whether your floor is repairable. Laminate’s core is compressed fiberboard. Wet it enough and the core swells like a sponge, except it never shrinks back.

Coming up from below

A concrete slab that was never tested, a missing vapor barrier, or a damp crawlspace will push moisture into the floor for years. This is what causes cupping specifically, because the underside of each plank takes on moisture the top side doesn’t. Cupped planks are a message about what’s under them.

Coming down from above

Spills that sat, wet mopping, a pet accident nobody found, a slow drip from the dishwasher or the ice maker. Water from above tends to show up first at the seams and edges, because that’s where the core is exposed. Peaking at one seam near the fridge is a plumbing clue, not a flooring clue.

Why gaps open between laminate planks

Gaps have three different causes and they are not treated the same way. Look at the pattern before you buy anything.

  • Small, even gaps all over the floor, arriving in winter: the dry furnace air pulled moisture out of the core and the planks shrank. This is seasonal, and it usually closes back up in the humid months.
  • Gaps at the short ends of planks, or in one area only: the floor is sliding, or it’s bound somewhere and being pulled apart. This does not fix itself when the weather turns.
  • One gap that keeps reopening in the same spot: the locking joint there is broken, probably during install. It won’t hold again.

The band you will see quoted for a stable laminate floor, 35% to 65% relative humidity, belongs to Shaw’s laminate installation page, and it is worth knowing whose number it is rather than treating it as settled consensus. Not everyone agrees. Bruce asks for 30% to 50%, so the two ranges only share their lower half. A Bruce floor sitting at 60% humidity is inside the number you will see quoted everywhere and outside the number Bruce actually printed. So check your own maker’s sheet rather than trusting a band off the internet, and if your house swings hard in winter, a humidifier is cheaper than a new floor.

How to diagnose it yourself

You can get most of the way to an answer in half an hour with a pry bar and a flashlight.

  1. 1Pull a length of shoe molding or quarter round off the wall nearest the damage. Look at the gap between the plank edge and the wall. If the plank is touching, you’ve probably found it.
  2. 2While the trim is off, look at where its nails went. If they run down through the flooring instead of back into the wall, the floor is pinned.
  3. 3Walk the perimeter of the room and look at the door casings. A plank jammed hard against a jamb does the same thing as a wall.
  4. 4Check what’s standing on the floor: island, cabinets, fridge, range, dishwasher, a very heavy bookcase.
  5. 5Hunt for water. Look under the dishwasher and the sink, behind the fridge, and around exterior doors.
  6. 6Dry the surface, then step firmly on the bad spot. If water rises through the seams or you hear a squish, there’s water under there.
  7. 7Tap along the planks. A hollow sound where the rest of the floor sounds solid means the plank has lifted off the subfloor.

If you own a moisture meter, a wood subfloor should read at or under 12% moisture content. Concrete is harder. A meaningful slab reading takes a calcium chloride test or an in-situ probe, which is genuinely a professional job, not a hardware-store gadget.

Will buckled laminate go back down?

Often, yes, and this is the part almost nobody tells you. If the floor buckled purely because it was pinned, then relieving the pressure lets it settle back down, and it can take a few days to do it. Cut the tight spots free, then leave it alone and let it walk itself back.

You may have read that a buckled floor never recovers. That line comes from the National Wood Flooring Association, and its exact words are worth having, because they explain themselves. Once the flooring has buckled, it says, the fasteners or adhesives are no longer effective, and the system will never return to its original state.

Read the mechanism in that sentence. It is describing a floor held down by fasteners or adhesive which have now failed. A floating laminate floor has neither. Nothing was holding it down, so nothing could fail. That is why the line does not simply transfer, and the association’s guidelines do not cover laminate anyway; they hand that product to the laminate body. We used to go further than this and tell you the rule was only ever about solid hardwood. It was not, and that was us putting words in their mouth: they say wood floor, and they mean engineered as well as solid.

Whether yours comes back depends on why it went up

This is the distinction that decides your floor, and we were too breezy about it before. If the floor buckled because it was pinned, with no room to grow, then relieving the pressure genuinely can let it settle. If it buckled because water got into it, that is a different story with a different ending. The core of a laminate plank is compressed fiberboard, and once it drinks water and swells, it does not shrink back. No amount of drying, waiting, or weighting brings it home. Notice too that the association sentence everybody quotes at you sits inside a chapter about water damage, which is precisely the case where our optimism does not apply. So find the cause before you take any comfort from this page.

It also won’t come back if the locking joints cracked while the floor was under pressure. A broken joint does not re-lock.

How to fix buckled laminate flooring

Re-cut the expansion gap

This is the repair that saves the most floors. Take off the shoe molding, then trim the flooring back from the wall wherever it’s touching. An oscillating multi-tool is the tool most people already own that will do it. A toe-kick saw is faster and usually a rental.

Go slowly at corners and door jambs. That’s where people chew up the tongue, gouge the drywall, or wreck the plank they were trying to save. Then walk the floor normally for a few days, and put the trim back nailed into the wall only, never into the floor.

Replacing one damaged plank

Two real methods. If the bad plank is close to a wall, pull the trim and unzip the rows back to it, swap it, and reassemble. Clean, but tedious. We used to warn you that a joint gives up after three clicks, and we credited that to a manufacturer we could not actually produce a document for, so it is gone. What we can show you is the opposite: Shaw says in its own instructions that its planks may be engaged and disengaged several times if that is what it takes to get the install right, and that carefully disassembled joints keep their locking integrity. Your locking system is not Shaw’s locking system, so read yours before you unzip half a room, but do not assume you get three goes and no more.

If it’s stranded in the middle of the room, installers cut it out in pieces, trim the tongue off a fresh plank so it can drop straight in, and glue it to its neighbors. It works and it’s much faster. Understand the trade though: that one plank is now stuck to the floor around it instead of floating with it. You’ve made a small fixed island in a moving floor.

Water damage, and the clock

If water got under the floor, speed is the whole game, and we are going to be straight with you about what we cannot tell you. You will find pages laying out a tidy timetable, water at the seams in two hours, the core gone in a day. Every one of those numbers traces back to a restoration company selling emergency callouts. No standard we could reach publishes that clock, and repeating it as though we had read one would make us no better. What is true is the mechanism: the core of a laminate plank is compressed fiberboard, it drinks water readily, and once it has swollen it will not go back. Move now rather than measure. Get fans on it, and pull the trim so air can reach the edges.

Minor swelling right at a seam sometimes eases as the plank dries. Once the core has bloomed, it cannot be pressed back down. That plank is finished, and no amount of drying changes it.

When the floor has to come up

  • The core has swelled, crumbled, or delaminated anywhere you look
  • The floor was flooded, not just spilled on
  • The subfloor underneath is wet and can’t be dried without pulling the floor off it
  • Whole rooms are buckled, not one hallway, and the slab was never tested
  • Joints have broken across a wide area, so the planks won’t lock again

Will the warranty cover it?

Maybe, and this section used to tell you no. We were wrong, in the direction that costs you money, so here is the honest version.

We told you the warranty would not cover water. On current floors, it often does.

This page used to argue that the exclusions in a laminate warranty are simply a list of the reasons floors actually fail, so a claim is close to pointless. That was a fair reading of what these brands sold ten years ago. It is not a fair reading of what they all sell now, and we should have checked. Mohawk’s RevWood Plus is the clear case: it carries a waterproof system warranty and an All Pet Plus warranty that names vomit, urine, and feces by name, and the document says Mohawk will cover reasonable labor costs. If that is your floor and you never filed because a page like ours talked you out of it, file. But read your own warranty rather than the box it came in, because the marketing and the document do not always agree. Pergo sells its WetProtect range on the promise that it handles pets and accidents, and the WetProtect warranty we were able to pull lists pet urine among the water damage it does not cover. We cannot tell you which version governs your floor. We can tell you that the sentence on the packaging is not the sentence you will be held to, and the one that counts is the PDF with your product name on it.

Mohawk also pays labour. The RevWood Plus warranty says that where the product was professionally installed, it will cover reasonable labour costs on a defective product. We previously told you Mohawk’s cover stopped dead at the installer’s work, which was not Mohawk’s sentence at all, and it left you thinking the fitting bill was yours to eat. It is not.

Where the water cover actually dies: the perimeter

So what does decide a claim? Read the fine print and the answer is startlingly consistent, and it is not a list of causes. It is a place. Pergo says complete wet coverage requires the perimeter of the floor to be sealed, and that the waterproof warranty does not apply to damage at an unsealed perimeter, naming leaks, spills, pet urine, and wet mopping. Shaw draws the same line differently, covering topical moisture only so long as the water does not run over the edge of the surface, meaning the edge of the room or a cut board.

That is the real driver, and knowing it beats any list of exclusions. Water resting on the surface of a properly sealed floor is very likely covered. Water that gets to the edge, down a cut board, past an unsealed threshold, or under the plank from below is very likely not. Which means the expansion gap, the sealant, and the trim, the boring things at the outside of the room, are what decide whether your claim pays.

The genuine exclusions are narrower than we let on and they are mostly catastrophes. Flooding, standing water, burst pipes, a failed appliance. Those are not everyday spills and no laminate warranty treats them as such. Damage caused by installation error is excluded too, which is the thing to remember if a crew skipped your expansion gap: that letter goes to the installer, not the maker.

One caution running the other way, because being wrong in your favour is still being wrong. Mohawk’s lifetime cover is not what people assume. It applies only to the original buyer, so it does not pass to whoever buys your house, and its value is prorated over time rather than staying whole.

If real money is on the line, an independent inspection is what settles it. The National Wood Flooring Association certifies inspectors and publishes a directory of them. Whoever requests the inspection pays up front. Shaw, for one, will reimburse that cost if the second opinion causes it to honour your claim, though do not assume every party in the chain works that way. Take photos now, before you fix anything.
